Datalogic is a world-class producer of bar code readers, data collection mobile computers, RFID systems and photoelectric sensors for the industrial automation sector. Headquartered in Bologna, Italy, Datalogic offers innovative solutions for many industrial applications and is comprised of three autonomous companies: Datalogic Scanning, Datalogic Mobile and Datalogic Automation.
Datalogic Scanning is the worldwide leader in fixed position retail scanning offering both in-counter and on-counter point-of-sale scanners and the best known provider of handheld scanners in EMEA, with the most complete line of general purpose and ruggedized handheld scanners in the world. A division of the Datalogic Group, Datalogic Scanning is headquartered in the United States with a presence in over 120 countries. The company serves multiple industries throughout the retail supply chain and distribution channel as well as manufacturing, government, healthcare, banking and finance sectors.
Datalogic Scanning implemented a CO-PA (Profitability Analysis) application in SAP so they could better analyze the profitability of segments of their markets, structured according to products, customers, orders, and organizational units such as company codes or business areas.
However, during the implementation, they discovered that if they wanted customer and document reference details, they had to enter them manually at the line-item level – a prohibitive task. They were further hindered by the 1000 line-item limit in SAP.
Datalogic Scanning had two options. “We explored the idea of developing a custom program with a user interface to upload worksheets to SAP, but found out it would not be very flexible,” says Dev Gulati, IT Project Manager, Datalogic Scanning. The other option was to purchase off-the-shelf software. That’s when they began to explore GLSU from Z Option.
“GLSU made more sense than creating our own program. With GLSU, we don’t have to maintain the software, and it gives us better flexibility and more options.”

After evaluating the software, Datalogic Scanning purchased GLSU for FI postings related to cost and profitability reporting.
“One of our consultants had worked with GLSU at another company,” Gulati recalls. “After he showed it to us, we felt that GLSU made more sense than creating our own program. With GLSU, we don’t have to maintain the software, and it gives us better flexibility and more options.”
According to Gulati, FI documents are traditionally very difficult to track. “When making a journal entry or memo, you can choose not to capture the detail,” Gulati says. “So the reporting is always a ‘black box.’ No one knew before what went into an FI transaction.”
He continues, “Now, when we want to include details for FI transactions, we can do it, because we have the right tool to do it. It’s easy to associate the FI level of detail with the sales data. With that association possible, we can know the specifics of a service contract entered in the SD module, for example.”
More Detailed Reporting: “Previously, we couldn’t enter 1000 line-items in an FI document,” says Gulati. “Now, with this tool, we have a new set of expectations and possibilities. We’ve achieved a new level of detail in the reporting that we simply didn’t have earlier.”
Increased Productivity: GLSU can support a large number of line-items, limited only by the version of MS Excel, without a corresponding increase in workload. “We can get better productivity without increasing overhead,” Gulati notes. “It just makes sense to use GLSU whenever you have a large number of line-items to post.”
Fewer Errors: “The user interface in GLSU is a big advantage,” Gulati states. Thanks to the prevalidation within GLSU, errors and inconsistencies are easily flagged and handled before posting to SAP.
Improved Flexibility: With GLSU, making entries is simple and fast and gives Datalogic Scanning improved flexibility.
“GLSU has increased our expectations about what is possible. It just makes sense to use GLSU whenever you have a large number of line items to post.”

Scanning now enjoys end-to-end profitability analysis at the production level. “We’ve never had that kind of reporting before,” Gulati notes. “GLSU enables that.”
Gulati calls the new level of detail in their profitability report a big business benefit. “It enables better analytics and decision making,” he says. “We can post transactions with more detail and insight – a big plus for us.”
Gulati feels they are just beginning to understand the tool’s potential. “GLSU has increased our expectations about what is possible,” he says. “We continue to find more uses for it as we learn more, especially when we have a lot of postings to do.” Improved business automation and loading other types of FI documents are next on the agenda. “The moment we saw GLSU for the first time, we were convinced it was going to work well for us,” says Gulati. “It has certainly lived up to our expectations.”
